In the centre of Rothwell stands – and has for centuries – a unique building. Everyone knows and loves it. But old buildings do not look after themselves, and the Market House is in desperate need of renovation work, particularly to the roof. Rothwell Preservation Trust, organised by local people who are all volunteers and responsible for the care of the building, is about to start a major fund-raising effort to enable the necessary repairs.

Work on a Grade 1 listed structure does not come cheap and, while grants will be sought, the Trust also looks to the people of Rothwell to help preserve this wonderful building. As yet, we do not have a precise figure for the overall cost but it is likely to cost in the region of £250,000. It will also take time – projects like this have to be taken slowly, I’m afraid. Already the initial surveys have been carried out and cost-analysis work undertaken.

However, when it is complete, we want the Market House to be more than merely a photo opportunity for tourists. At the moment, it is home to Rothwell Town Council, which has been generous in its support of the project, but more can and will be done to open its doors to everyone.
