Welcome back to the Rothwell Preservation Trust’s weekly Post – keeping you up-to-date about the Trust and its buildings!

We’re pleased to present our NEW weekly series of images that began a few weeks ago!

See the published collection so far HERE.

Alistair Mackay served as a Trustee for the Rothwell Preservation Trust from 2013 until his passing in May of this year. He was a well-loved figure around Rothwell and we will all miss his expertise in coins & timepieces, plus his extensive knowledge of the history of Rothwell.

Recently, Alistair donated a series of Postcards to us from his vast collection of Rothwell memorabilia. They all feature images of the Market House. Some are black and white, whilst others are in colour. 👍😀

In memory of our fellow Trustee and friend, we are presenting each Postcard from his collection over the next few months and we hope they bring back memories of our famous building.👏👏

15 September 2025 – With just TWO more Postcards left to publish, welcome to the 11th in our series from Alistair’s collection.

See the published collection so far HERE. More to come!

This is another Postcard in immaculate condition. In fact, Alistair left us two of these and they look like they were printed yesterday! Both are in immaculate condition and without any blemishes or colour fade. The scene is looking westwards towards Market and note the lamp-post that looks like it was borrowed from Narnia! There’s no evidence of a date anywhere of the photograph – over to you, our Postcard Detectives for your help.

The Postcard is simply labelled ‘ MARKET PLACE. ROTHWELL with ‘RTL.34F’ preceding the text. We assume this is a cataloguing number of some sort. The Postcard was produced by the famous Frith company (originally based in Raglan Road, Reigate) and you can just about see their copyright, bottom right. For more information about Frith and the ‘Postcard Years’ see this link:-

The Reverse

On the reverse, once again, the condition is immaculate with just ’50p’ pencilled-in where the stamp would go. Alistair’s second identical copy has ‘Northants £2.50’ pencilled in to the left of the stamp position plus the capital letter ‘A’ top left (again in pencil).

As always, if you have any more information about this week’s image – and maybe the year it was taken, drop us a line – thank-you! Contact us at info@RothwellPreservationTrust.org or leave a message in the comments.

As many of you know, the Market House needs a major makeover. The roof is leaking and must be replaced soon – and the stonework needs a thorough clean too! So why not help us conserve Rothwell’s most recognisable building for future generations by making a donation – Thank you! – Our Fundraising Page is HERE.
