Welcome back to the Rothwell Preservation Trust’s weekly Post – keeping you up-to-date about the Trust and its buildings!

We’re continuing our new series across social media and here, on our website: “From the Archives…”, celebrating images of our iconic Market House through the years.

Whether you’ve lived in Rothwell all your life (and seen most of the existing pictures in various places!) or just moved in to the area, we hope there will be something for everyone. 👌

This week’s image
Today, we’re pleased to present the EIGHTH in our series. This week’s is a real find! It features a drawing from 1719 (probably) by Flemish Painter, Peter Tillemans (1684-1734). The illustration shows the north side of the building where the small black squares are thought to have been holes that supported the scaffolding when the building was first erected on or around 1578. An extra special thanks to our colleagues at Rothwell Arts & Heritage Centre for tracking this one down! 👏👍

For an extensive collection of Northamptonshire illustrations by Tillemans and friends, download the FREE book from the Northamptonshire Record Society from this link.

As many of you know, the Market House needs a major makeover. The roof is leaking and must be replaced soon, so why not help us preserve Rothwell’s most recognisable building for future generations by making a donation – Thank you! – Our Fundraising Page is HERE.

We’d like to thank Northamptonshire Archive Service
and our good friends at Rothwell Arts & Heritage Centre for their help
in collating the content for this series 😁.
