Welcome back to the Rothwell Preservation Trust’s weekly Post – keeping you up-to-date about the Trust and its buildings!

Today, we are launching a NEW weekly image-based series. Alistair MacKay served as a Trustee for the Rothwell Preservation Trust from 2013 until his passing in May of this year. He was a well-known and loved figure around Rothwell town, and we will all miss his expertise in coins and timepieces, plus his extensive knowledge of the history of the town of Rothwell.

A month-or-so ago, Alistair donated a series of Postcards to the Trust from his vast collection of Rothwell memorabilia. They all feature images of the Market House. Some are black and white whilst others are in colour. 👍😀

In memory of our fellow Trustee and friend, we will be presenting each Postcard from his collection over the coming weeks and we hope they bring back memories of yesteryear in Rothwell👏👏

30 June 2025 – Our first Postcard from Alistair’s collection.

As to the year, the copyright is ‘RWL’ – definitely someone’s initials rather than a poor example of Roman numerals! So, we don’t know the exact year, do you? 🤔

The Printer is Lilywhite Ltd where a short piece of research on the internet reveals the following:

Arthur Frederick Sergeant (1882-1952) founded Lilywhite & Company in about 1910 and was a keen photographer. He had previously set up the Halifax Photographic Company in New Brunswick Street, Halifax, and also took over a photographic business in St. Albans.

On the reverse of the Postcard are the printed words “Guaranteed Real Photo and British Manufacture”.

As always, if you have any more information about this week’s image, drop us a line – thank-you! Contact us at info@RothwellPreservationTrust.org or leave a message in the comments.

As many of you know, the Market House needs a major makeover. The roof is leaking and must be replaced soon, so why not help us to conserve Rothwell’s most recognisable building for future generations by making a donation – Thank you! – Our Fundraising Page is HERE.
