Welcome to “From the Archives…”, celebrating the many wonderful images of our iconic Market House through the years.

Whether you’ve lived in Rothwell all your life (and seen most of the existing pictures in various places!) or just moved in to the area, we hope there will be something for everyone. 👌

5 May 2025 – This week’s image 📷🤳🖼
This week’s offering is the 21st in our series and like many previous images, we’re trying to guess the year. This week’s Market House image is from a Postcard, part of a series donated to the Trust. Interestingly, on the reverse, it’s labelled as ‘The Library, Rothwell’ which, as many of you know took on this role from 1896 until 1986. Looking closer at the image, we have a person crossing (a very quiet) Market Hill and to the right, is that a telephone box? (I wonder when that was removed?). Parked immediately outside the Market House – pre-pedestrian crossing days! – are two similarly coloured cars. The resolution of the scanned image is not high enough to date the shot by looking at the registration plates, but one car looks like a Mk1 Ford Escort and the other, parked in front, a Vauxhall Viva. Closest to the camera, under the Pub sign, is a Hillman Hunter. In the far distance, you might be able to spot the rear of a Ford Transit and where to the left, and closer to the camera, it looks like a Reliant Robin. Finally, is that a Ford Anglia parked where we now have EV charging points?

The Postcard was printed by District View Publishing Company of 117 Loughborough Road, Leicester and a handwritten comment on the reverse suggests the year is ‘1975-1980’. I wonder if you can help us narrow it down?

As usual, if you have any more information about this week’s image, drop us a line – thank-you! 🤝

As many of you know, the Market House needs a major makeover. The roof is leaking and must be replaced soon, so why not help us preserve Rothwell’s most recognisable building for future generations by making a donation – Thank you! – Our Fundraising Page is HERE.

We’d like to thank Northamptonshire Archive Service,
our good friends at Rothwell Arts & Heritage Centre and our many Supporters of the Trust
for their help in collating the content for this series 😁.
