Welcome back to the Rothwell Preservation Trust’s weekly Post – keeping you up-to-date about the Trust and its buildings!
We’re pleased to present our NEW weekly series of images that began a few weeks ago!
See the published collection so far HERE.
Alistair Mackay served as a Trustee for the Rothwell Preservation Trust from 2013 until his passing in May of this year. He was a well-loved figure around Rothwell and we will all miss his expertise in coins & timepieces, plus his extensive knowledge of the history of Rothwell.
Recently, Alistair donated a series of Postcards to us from his vast collection of Rothwell memorabilia. They all feature images of the Market House. Some are black and white, whilst others are in colour. 👍😀
In memory of our fellow Trustee and friend, we are presenting each Postcard from his collection over the next few months and we hope they bring back memories of our famous building.👏👏
8 September 2025 – Our TENTH Postcard from Alistair’s collection.
See the published collection so far HERE. More to come!
The Front
Another pristine Postcard from Alistair’s collection that shows our Market House looking from the east. It’s labelled ‘Market Place, Rothwell’ with the postcard serial number ‘H.1990’. Again, we have an almost deserted road and a lone resident feeling confident enough to use the road instead of the path! Clearly, this was a time when vehicles were somewhat rare in Rothwell.

Having said that, there’s a car parked over to the right – does anyone recognise the make and model? 🤔

The Back
The brand name of ‘Valentine’s’ is clearly shown proudly confirming (vertically and in the centre) ‘THIS IS A REAL PHOTOGRAPH’.

From our research, we can see this was probably printed by ‘Valentine & Sons’ founded in Dundee, Scotland in 1851. Usefully (and luckily for us) the ‘H.1990’ previously mentioned and printed on the front of the Postcard can be entered into an online database for Valentine’s series of Postcards HERE to approximate the date of the photograph. According to their database, this image was registered in 1939. Do the fashions and the car model confirm this? 🤔
As always, if you have any more information about this week’s image, drop us a line – thank-you! Contact us at info@RothwellPreservationTrust.org or leave a message in the comments.

As many of you know, the Market House needs a major makeover. The roof is leaking and must be replaced soon – and the stonework needs a thorough clean! So why not help us to conserve Rothwell’s most recognisable building for future generations by making a donation – Thank you! – Our Fundraising Page is HERE.
