Welcome back to the Rothwell Preservation Trust’s weekly Post – keeping you up-to-date about the Trust and its buildings!

We’re pleased to present our latest weekly series of images that began in late June this year!

See the published collection so far HERE.

Alistair Mackay served as a Trustee for the Rothwell Preservation Trust from 2013 until his passing in May of this year. He was a much-loved figure around Rothwell and we will all miss his expertise in coins & timepieces, plus his extensive knowledge of the history of Rothwell.

Recently, Alistair donated a series of Postcards to us from his vast collection of Rothwell memorabilia. They all feature images of the Market House. Some are black and white, whilst others are in colour. 👍😀

In memory of our fellow Trustee and friend, we are presenting each Postcard from his collection that we hope they bring back memories of our famous building.👏👏

25 August 2025 – Our NINTH Postcard from Alistair’s collection.

See the published collection so far HERE. A few more to come!

Our ninth Postcard from Alistair’s series is simply labelled Market House and Bridge Street, Rothwell and is probably most memorable for the single pedestrian boldly standing in the middle of the road – for our younger readers, do not try this! 😉🤔. Close by, there is another resident, more sensibly standing on the pavement with his faithful dog. In the distance, a vehicle (or a stack of provisions?) can be seen outside the Red Lion Public House. Moving to the foreground, a closer inspection reveals a small gathering of people, including a small child, outside the east door of the Market House.

The Postcard is unused and in pristine condition. Sadly, no clues at all on the reverse as to when the photograph was taken except for the letters – C.F.P.–N. – printed vertically in the centre of the left hand edge. Are these the initials of the Printer or the Photographer – or are they part of a cataloguing system? (we’ve seen them on other Postcards of a similar style, but those examples also include a number). If there are any Collectors out there that understand the significance of these letters, we’d be delighted to hear from you. 👍👏

Finally the letter ‘A’ is hand-written in pencil with ‘N’HANTS’ adjacent to it. Maybe ‘A’ is for Alistair?

Over to you, our Postcard Detectives for more information! 🤔

Our next Postcard will be here in TWO weeks – 8th September!

As many of you know, the Market House needs a major makeover. The roof is leaking and must be replaced soon – and the stonework needs a thorough clean! So why not help us to conserve Rothwell’s most recognisable building for future generations by making a donation – Thank you! – Our Fundraising Page is HERE.
