Welcome back to the Rothwell Preservation Trust’s weekly Post – keeping you up-to-date about the Trust and its buildings!
We’re pleased to present our NEW weekly series of images that began a few months ago!
See the published collection so far HERE.
Alistair Mackay served as a Trustee for the Rothwell Preservation Trust from 2013 until his passing in May of this year. He was a well-loved figure around Rothwell and we will all miss his expertise in coins & timepieces, plus his extensive knowledge of the history of Rothwell.
Recently, Alistair donated a series of Postcards to us from his vast collection of Rothwell memorabilia. They all feature images of the Market House. Some are black and white, whilst others are in colour. 👍😀
In memory of our fellow Trustee and friend, we are presenting each Postcard from his collection over the next few months and we hope they bring back memories of our famous building.👏👏
18 August 2025 – Our EIGHTH Postcard from Alistair’s collection.
See the published collection so far HERE. More to come!
This time, it’s another monochrome image and another that’s been used as intended – written and posted! On this occasion, the addressee is local(ish) – a ‘Miss Millard of ‘Broadway, Kettering’ – more details coming up.
The Front
We’re offered just a few clues as to WHEN this photograph was taken, where the Postcard is simply titled: Market House. Rothwell. There have been a few variations on the titling compared with other similar items, including, Old Market House and Market House, Kettering. Elsewhere, men on bikes are just about visible but the Postcard’s imagery was quite deteriorated and the contrast was poor, making it difficult to reveal any further detail. There are dwellings to the rear of the Market House where vehicles now park. Looking closer, note the external light positioned just below the clock that’s no longer there in many other photographs.
The Reverse
The reverse of the Postcard probably helps us narrow down the year.

The stamp features George V (who reigned from 1911-1936) and where the franking sports a rather large ’13’ where we therefore believe it was franked some time in 1913.
“Dear Miss Millard
I hope you received the message I sent for Miss Chappell & that you will be able to come and have a game & tea with us at the K. C. J Tournament (Thursday) afternoon. 3 – 6. Yours Sincerely R. E. Pierce“
We’re uncertain about the reference to ’75p’ near the stamp at the top. Perhaps that is the price paid by Alistair?
As always, if you have any more information about this week’s image – and the year it was taken, drop us a line – thank-you! Contact us at info@RothwellPreservationTrust.org or leave a message in the comments.

As many of you know, the Market House needs a major makeover. The roof is leaking and must be replaced soon – and the stonework needs a thorough clean! So why not help us to conserve Rothwell’s most recognisable building for future generations by making a donation – Thank you! – Our Fundraising Page is HERE.
