Welcome back to the Rothwell Preservation Trust’s weekly Post – keeping you up-to-date about the Trust and its buildings!
Say hello to our NEW weekly series of images that began last week! (See last week’s HERE).
Alistair Mackay served as a Trustee for the Rothwell Preservation Trust from 2013 until his passing in May of this year. He was a well-loved figure around Rothwell and we will all miss his expertise in coins & timepieces, plus his extensive knowledge of the history of Rothwell.
Recently, Alistair donated a series of Postcards to us from his vast collection of Rothwell memorabilia. They all feature images of the Market House. Some are black and white, whilst others are in colour. 👍😀
In memory of our fellow Trustee and friend, we are presenting each Postcard from his collection over the next few months and we hope they bring back memories of our famous building.👏👏
7 July 2025 – Our second Postcard from Alistair’s collection.
See last week’s Postcard HERE.
Unusually, the Postcard’s image is in colour – looking closer at the fashions, colour imagery was quite rare ‘back then’ (even though we don’t know the date!). Closer inspection reveals that it’s actually been ‘colourised’ (the technique of adding colour to a monochrome image). Of course, during that time, there was no ‘AI’ to do this automagically, so it would have been a very time-consuming exercise. Note that it’s labelled ‘OLD Market House’ at the foot of the Postcard (was there ever a newer building? We’re pretty sure there wasn’t!) 🤔

On the reverse of the postcard, there’s no message but it’s simply addressed to:-
Master Jack Bell, Arnold House, Kingsley Park Terrace, Northampton.
Initial research shows that ‘Arnold House’ was also once a Children’s Home in Northampton. Other features? The Postcard is postmarked ‘Northampton’ and has ‘H B Ringstone, Rothwell’ written vertically on the left had edge. Was this the Printer? Nothing to be found using ‘Mr Google’ about H B Ringstone.
As always, if you have any more information about this week’s image, drop us a line – thank-you! Contact us at info@RothwellPreservationTrust.org or leave a message in the comments.

As many of you know, the Market House needs a major makeover. The roof is leaking and must be replaced soon and the stonework needs a clean! So why not help us to conserve Rothwell’s most recognisable building for future generations by making a donation – Thank you! – Our Fundraising Page is HERE.
